Giving Thanks

You've kept track of my every toss and turn through the sleepless nights, each tear entered in your ledger, each ache written in your book.

Ps. 56:8 (MSG)

I was so looking forward to getting a goodnights rest but it was not meant to be.  Every time I closed my eyes his face kept showing up.  Get up and pray for him!

We almost drove by him this evening and we would have missed a blessing if Cindy hadn’t shouted and asked me to go back.  Thank you Lord for placing so many beautiful volunteers in the van; volunteers that aren’t afraid to yell out instructions. He was shuffling down the street looking dejected when we pulled up and asked him if he would like a lunch bag.  His face lit up with the biggest smile and he said “Yes please, I’ve just moved into the neighborhood and I don’t have any food.  I’ve visited a few of the churches on the street and none of them give out food.”  We gave him 2 lunch bags.  When we asked to pray with him he kept saying, “Thank you Jesus.”  Before he walked away I noticed he had a brace on and asked him about it.  He said he had surgery a few weeks ago and they fused his spine so it was difficult for him to get around.  Our hearts just ached for this man who was so hungry that he would walk the streets looking for food.  I kept thinking how in just a few days most of us would sit down with family and/or friends and enjoy a Thanksgiving feast, what would this man have to eat?  Will he still be taking painful steps up and down the streets in his neighborhood looking for food?  Lord, please provide for this humble elderly gentleman, may he find neighbors who will invite him to share their Thanksgiving meal.  If he has family may they remember to invite him to partake in their meal.  Lord, keep this man in your loving hands, provide for him, protect him, keep him warm, fill his stomach, heart and mind, for great is your mercy.

For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.  Matthew 25:35

"O God, when I have food, help me to remember the hungry;

When I have work, help me to remember the jobless;

When I have a home, help me to remember those who have no home at all;

When I am without pain, help me to remember those who suffer,

And remembering, help me to destroy my complacency; bestir my compassion, and be concerned enough to help;

By word and deed, those who cry out for what we take for granted.

Amen."  (by Samuel F. Pugh)

Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35

May you have a very blessed Thanksgiving.

Love, Donna
